Things to do in Chicago in October

October can be a lovely month in Chicago. The excitement of the many weekend neighborhood festivals may be gone (along with many of the tourists) but there’s still plenty to do before winter sets in. Many of the farmer’s markets spread throughout the city are still operating, and of course, the end of the month brings Halloween, one of the best nights of the year for both kids and adults. Here are some of the best things to do in Chicago in October.

Daily – through October 31 – Chicagoween-Pumpkin patches, costume contests and more in Daley Plaza

October 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 – Free tours of Half Acre Beer Company at 1pm. RSVP required.

October 4, 11, 18, 25 – Free admission at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, with free tours on Tuesdays at 1pm, 2pm and 6pm.

October 6, 13, 20, 27– Free admission at the Art Institute from 5pm to 8pm and free admission at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum all day

October 8 – Pilsen 2nd Friday Artwalk. One of my favorite monthly events, the Artwalk is held at galleries in Pilsen, around 18th and Halsted. Free wine and cheese and great art make this is an excellent (and low-cost) night out. 6pm-10pm

October 10, 17, 24, 31– DuSable Museum of African American History from noon – 5pm

October 10– October 13 – Free Admission at the Chicago History Museum

October 19 and October 26 – Nighttime Creature Features at the Garfield Park Conservatory – Live nocturnal animals like fruit bats, spiders, and owls make a rare daytime appearance.

October 28-30 – Franken Plaza at Daily Plaza

October 30 – Free admission at the Museum of Science and Industry

October 30 and 31 – Halloween!
